The New Biology Of Belief: Changing Our Cells By Thought
Dr. Bruce Lipton explains that the nature of our body is determined by how the we interpret the environment. Science has been ignoring the importance of the mind because it is intangible. But Dr. Lipton provides a good analogy of the human body being like a car, but a car needs a driver, which is the mind in the case of human beings. Without a good driver, even the best car can be destroyed. He feels that we have not been taught good driver education to take responsibility for and care of our body.
Did you know that over 95% of your everyday behaviors and biology is determined by your subconscious mind? Dr. Lipton explains that we have a conscious mind and a subconscious mind. The conscious mind is the creative part that is aware of what we want and do not want. The subconscious mind is like a “tape player” which learns behavior and when you push a button it plays the behavior over and over again. The “primary programs” were downloaded in our subconscious mind by observing other people relevant in your life like your parents, siblings, friends, and community.
Why are you not able achieve what you desire when you think you are running your life? The answer is that you are not running your life because there is a gap between what your conscious mind wants and what has been programmed in your subconsious mind. It is your subconsious mind which has been shaped by the beliefs and programs of other people that is running your life.
How can we change our subconscious mind so gain more control over our life? Telling yourself to change of getting mad at yourself does not change the tape. Dr. Lipton says there are many ways to change the tape and briefly describes two - “Buddhist mindfulness” and “habits.” According to mindfulness, if you are paying attention to the present moment you will not let the tape run and have control over your life. When the mind wanders, thats when the tape runs and when you are present “you are running the show.” The other way to change behaviors is creating new habits because “the subconscious mind learns habits.” In the beginning it is tough but repeating it regularly will make it easier.
Dr. Lipton’s message to the world is that we are in a creation mode and can make the world that we desire by taking responsibility over our thoughts and beliefs.
